Project
Motivation
Although various forms of distributed virtual environments exist today, most of them are based on proprietary and centralized technologies. These approaches usually scale to no more than a few thousand concurrent participants. In the HyperVerse project we investigate how global-scale distributed virtual environments with several millions or even billions of concurrent users can be provided for creating a new kind of global, collaborative virtual space that might supersede today's World Wide Web.
Research Approach
In order to tackle the problems involved in such a scenario, particular focus is put on the following approaches...
- Providing scalability with regard to a highly interactive setting with millions of users
- Creation and utilization of novel paradigms for global-scale distributed computing
- Self-Organization and Self-Adaptation in very large scale distributed systems
- Provision of a self-adapting notion of consistency
- Collaborative information management for enhancing the user experience
